About Department
Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering
The Department of
Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering was started by the merger of two
Departments i.e Biotechnology and Genetics. Department of Genetics was already
running BS, MPhil and PhD program. The Department has a total number of 20
Faculty members. Out of which 16 are PhD and 04 non-PhD Faculty members. The
Department offering admission in BS, MPhil and PhD and award degrees in the
same programs.
Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering is a
multi-disciplinary program that emerged from the fusion of technological fields
and natural sciences (genetics, biology and biochemistry). Therefore, the
combinations of skills and various scientific disciplines maximizes the
benefits of teaching and research programs. The modern science of biotechnology influences many aspects of daily life, from the food we eat to how we identify criminals or treat diseases or environment in which we live. In agriculture, genetic advances enable scientists to alter a plant or animal to make it more useful. For instance, some food crops, such as oranges, potatoes, wheat, and rice, have been genetically altered to withstand insect pests, resulting in a higher crop yield. Tomatoes and apples have been modified so that they resist discoloration or bruising on their way to market, enhancing their appeal on supermarket shelves. The genetic makeup of cows has been modified to increase their milk production, and cattle raised for beef have been altered so that they grow faster. Genetic technologies are also helpful for convicting criminals and solving hereditary discrepancies. Environmental Biotechnology is helping out the challenges of global environment.
The extensive research programs within the departments spreads over multifarious disciplines and covers all major aspects of Biotechnology, including but not limited to Plant Biotechnology, Agriculture Biotechnology, Animal Biotechnology, Health Biotechnology, Industrial Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology, Microbial Biotechnology, Genetic Engineering, Molecular Biology, Conservation Genetics, biochemistry, Nanobiotechnology, Recombinant DNA technology, Genomics and Proteomics.
Since its inception, it moved
with rapid pace of development with respect to infrastructure, academics and
research facilities. Department has a distinguished history of excellence in
teaching and research, and our staff is committed in maintaining the highest
possible level of excellence. Our commitment is to provide outstanding
mentoring and quality research, for the training and capacity building of the
next generation of talented young scientists. The faculty of Department of Biotechnology and Genetic
Engineering has abundant teaching and research experience in vast majority
fields at both national and international platforms.
Vision
The department has vision to nurture scientific mind graduates with a potential to innovate, invent and disseminate knowledge for the benefit of society and environment. Enhancing the capacity of the young professionals for efficient contribution towards the national development through high quality of teaching and standard research for utilizing living systems to meet the emerging needs of the society.
Mission
Biotechnology and Genetic engineering being a future science is
determined to provide trained work force for Biotechnological &
pharmaceutical industries, agriculture, forensic science laboratories of law
enforcement agencies, jobs in teaching and research organizations.
Values
The department has the following general values;
i. Create good human beings equipped with positive ideas, higher moral values and tolerant behaviors.
ii. To discuss diverse topics and help student in building their career through career counseling committee of B&GE
iii. To provide friendly environment for discussing everyday science, advances in Biotechnology and Genetic engineering to extended from personnel to professional.
iv. To think positively
v. Self-respect
vi. To provide group behavior and work in team
