Hazara University Mansehra

Department of Physics

Department of Physics was established in 2003. M.Sc program was started in 2004, BS (Hons) in 2007 and M.Phil /Ph.D in 2008. Department of Physics has produced eleven Ph.Ds all of whom are working as faculty and researchers in different Universities of country. More than hundred students have got M.Phil degrees and around 100 per annum are getting BS/M.Sc degrees. Many of our graduates are involved in doing Ph.Ds in and outside country. Department has three research labs including computational lab, Nano science and theoretical lab. We have established research collaboration with National Center for Physics, PIEAS Islamabad, INORE Abbottabad, and Other Public sector organizations/Universities. One teaching lab is being equipped with basic Physics instruments for undergraduate students. Seminar library/ computer lab with internet facilities is being established.
Physics Department aims at imparting the scientific and technological knowledge for the developments of the society in accordance with international standard, compatible with the national education policies.
The mission of Physics Department is to produce physics graduate equipped with scientific knowledge, creative thinking and innovative skill in order to contribute in developing and sharing knowledge in scientific community. The department is struggling in learning through academic programs; acquirement of new knowledge through research activities; becoming a strong center of attraction in the national and international communities with its undergraduate and graduate programs.

1. Nano Technology Lab
We have established the research lab for the M.Phil and Ph.D students. This is a wet-chemical lab based on the synthesis of nanoparticles of different types. The synthesis of materials is possible by different routes, which include Green Chemistry Method, Sol-Gel Method, Hydrothermal Method and Co-Precipitation Method. We have all the basic requirements and apparatus for the fabrication of materials, mainly, glassware, magnetic stirrer, hot plates, weight balances, centrifuges, oven and other necessary items to achieve the goal. Other than synthesis, we characterize the samples from different collaborative national institutes. Also the the simulation of synthesized samples can be carried out using different models.
2. Theoretical Lab
Lab of Atom & Quantum Interference’ was established in 2012 which was then changed to Laboratory of Theoretical Physics (LTP) which is a landmark in the history of Physics Department. The mission of the “LTP” is to equip students with knowledge and skills needed for the socio-economic development of the country. We use the basic tools of physics and develop theoretical models which open new avenues for the experimentalists. Number of M.phil/Phd Students are working all the day long in LTP where they solve and design their research problems. In the last few years the research family of LTP have published dozen of papers in ISI indexed journals of international repute. LTP has collaborations with the national laboratories such as National Center of Physics (NCP) , National Institute of Laser and Optronics (NILOP) Islamabad, Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science & Technology (PINSTECH) Islamabad, Center for High Energy Physics (CHEP) University of Punjab and Lab of Molecular Imprinted Polymers (MIP) Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan. Student of LTP also Visit the said labs for experimental research work.
3. Material Modelling and Simulation Laboratory
Mainly using Density Functional Theory in the frame work of, WIEN2k,, Quantum-ESPRESSO, and VASP codes for the investigation of thermoelectric properties in bulk, two dimensional oxides, layered materials and their hetrostructures, Alloys with vacancies and doped magnetic material for new spintronic and optoelectronic devices, Organic molecules on metallic surfaces and Interface of oxides pervoskites, Phonon spectrum and viberational properties of materials, Band gap engineering for optoelectronic devices and Hetrostructures with type-II band alignment.
Department of Physics focuses on research collaborations with national and international organizations. The PhD and MPhil of our Department are working in Pakistan Institute of Engineering & Applied Sciences (PIEAS), National Center for Physics, Pakistan Council of Renewable Energy Technologies (PCRET), National Institute of Laser and Optronics (NILOP) International Center for Theoretical Physics(ICTP) Italy, Most of Public Sector Universities and number of International Institutes.
